Rutherford

A surviving photograph of Rutherford.

Rutherford was a revolutionary and political ideologue who was greatly influential in the revolution that resulted in the creation of the Ingsoc Party of Oceania. Rutherford was an American caricaturist whose brutal cartoons helped to inflame public opinion before and during the revolution. Many later caricaturists imitated his style.

In 1965 Rutherford and two colleagues of his were arrested during a period referred to as "the great purges" and withheld for a year or more[1] when they were brought forward and confessed to a number of crimes including intelligence sharing with the then enemy state of Eurasia, embezzlement of public funds, the murder of various Party members, intrigues against the leadership of Big Brother which had allegedly started long before the revolution and acts of sabotage which apparently resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

Following their confession all three were pardoned and offered sinecure positions within the Party. An article written by Rutherford appeared in the Times in which he analysed the reasons for his defection. Shortly afterwards Rutherford was re-arrested, allegedly for engaging in new conspiracies. Rutherford was executed shortly afterwards.
